There's no single right answer for how often to get an eye test — it depends on your age, your prescription history, and whether anything has changed recently. Here's how we'd actually advise a customer who asked us in-store.
General Guidance by Age
Adults with no known vision problems are usually fine with a test every two years. Once presbyopia typically sets in — see our guide on vision changes after 40 — annual testing is generally worth it, since prescriptions tend to shift more noticeably in this stage. Children should be tested annually, as covered in our kids' eyewear guide, since their eyes change faster than adults'.
Signs You Shouldn't Wait
A few things are worth booking a test for regardless of when your last one was: noticeably blurred vision at any distance, frequent headaches (especially after reading or screen work), squinting to see things you didn't used to squint at, eye strain that doesn't improve with rest, or any sudden change in vision. Sudden vision changes in particular are worth acting on quickly rather than waiting.
If You Wear Contact Lenses
Contact lens wearers generally need slightly more frequent check-ups than glasses-only wearers, since lens fit and eye health both need reviewing, not just the prescription itself — see our daily contact lens guide for more on this.
What We Check For
Beyond the prescription number itself, a proper eye test also picks up early signs of broader eye health issues that have nothing to do with needing glasses — which is part of why we don't recommend skipping tests just because your vision "feels fine."
